Keris Balinese Ceremonial Daggers

What is a keris?
A kris is a ceremonial dagger from Indonesia, typically has a wavy blade. Prepared from a mixture of iron, nickel and steel, are thought to originate from the 10th century Imperial Keris Airlangga, as I Nyoman Kusuma Veda, a professor at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Udayana in Denpasar. It is here that the title of "Mpu KERIS '(experts Kris), which appear in Javanese literature begins.

Surrounded by myths and legends that have grown over the centuries, these daggers are associated with magic and the supernatural, and to date, many are believed to have KERIS other secular forces.
Ida Bagus Sudarsana, the head of Indonesia Hindu Association, believes that the physical structure of the dagger as a representation of the human body with the handle in the head, the magazine is our collarbone, the tee of the shoulder blades, and 11 the waves in the blade bone, such as the chest. The number of waves, but may vary from Keris Indonesia.

Keris vary in shape and form depending on the region, both from Indonesia, what they are and who the manufacturer. Religious beliefs have also influenced Keris forms over the centuries, with the hilt of a half moon KERIS Islamic and Christian is like a crucifix.

To increase the prestige of a keris, the handle can be carved and inlaid with a variety of gemstones.
There are many makers Keris Bali, especially in Denpasar, Klungkung and Tabanan, and varies according to quality. One of the most famous manufacturers in Denpasar Pande Nyoman Keris Budiana of Tatasan Kelod blacksmith who inherits its capabilities from a line and many hundreds of years. The world's largest collection of KERIS is owned by the owner of the Neka Museum in Ubud, Pande Suteja Neka.

A family, a Keris?
As the seminar I attended in Denpasar, Bali museum about the importance of preserving the tradition of Bali keris, I learned a lot about these terrible weapons stunning works of art too. A common theme of the speakers was that every family should have a Balinese Hindu KERIS. It has always been a tradition that every family has a KERIS of Bali, but these days, with the tendency of the modern nuclear family, which are increasingly on the island, smaller families are not deep in the traditions that are their ancestors once followed.
Keris are not only important, Balinese, as officially as "a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" talk, but drunk, because the tangible and intangible elements within this beautiful traditional dagger.

According to Professor Nyoman Kusuma Veda, a professor at the University of Udayana, pious devotion to God is symbolized by the tip of the blade up. The double-edged sword implies that human sacrifice that have structured a cultural basis, and spiritual teachings. In detail, breaking the metal parts of the knife (not the handle or sheath) in 16 parts, which carry a symbolic meaning and philosophy of how they should live, as a guide for thought and behavior.

In the context of Balinese society are important tools Keris rituals. They are necessary for a series of ceremonies and rituals, because God, the living, the dead and the supernatural. A keris is as powerful symbolic and philosophical, even replace the visit of the groom on their wedding, in his absence due to illness or official business. Traditional security guards (pecalang) KERIS always carry, and the dancers of Bali, according to the character they represent. Even the gamelan musicians in some villages to attract a keris, hidden in his shorts.
